Why the Disk Order Can Change Safely<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

DSM builds its storage pools on Linux software RAID, and software RAID does not identify a member disk by the bay it sits in. Each disk carries its own metadata describing which array it belongs to and what its role in that array is. On boot, DSM reads that metadata off every disk it finds and reassembles the pool from what it reads, not from the slot numbering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the whole reason the swap survives a reboot. Move drive 1 to bay 4 and drive 4 to bay 1, power on, and the pool comes back exactly as it was. The only visible difference is cosmetic: DSM numbers drives by physical bay, so Storage Manager will show the same disk under a different drive number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Safe Procedure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  1. Shut the NAS down properly<\/strong> from DSM. Do not pull disks from a running system to change the disk order; that is a hot-removal and it will degrade the array instead of moving it.<\/li>
  2. Label the disks before you pull them.<\/strong> The array does not need the labels, but you will, the moment something else goes wrong mid-job.<\/li>
  3. Move the disks<\/strong> into the bays you want.<\/li>
  4. Power on and check Storage Manager.<\/strong> The pool should come up healthy with the drive numbers following the new bays.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    When Disk Order Does Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Three cases are not the same job, and the metadata argument above does not cover them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Main unit to expansion unit.<\/strong> Moving disks between the NAS itself and a DX or RX expansion shelf is not a bay reorder. A storage pool belongs to one enclosure and does not travel between them by moving disks.<\/li>
    • A different NAS model.<\/strong> Putting the whole set of disks into another Synology is a migration, with its own compatibility rules depending on the two models and their DSM versions. Check the migration compatibility before you start, not after.<\/li>
    • A degraded or rebuilding pool.<\/strong> Finish the repair first. Changing the disk order while the array is rebuilding removes the redundancy you are relying on.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
