Surveillance Station camera licenses and MailPlus licenses are both built to move. Virtual DSM and VMM Pro move too, but through their own screens in Virtual Machine Manager. What never moves are the free licenses that came with the hardware.

This guide covers every Synology license transfer we handle for customers: the normal delete-and-add route, the migration route for a NAS that no longer boots, MailPlus, the two virtualization licenses, and the one case that needs Synology Support.

Point SynoPower Club : The message we get most often after a hardware upgrade is that the licenses are gone. They almost never are. The keys are still valid, the new NAS simply has not been told about them yet. Two habits decide whether a Synology license transfer takes two minutes or two days: copying the keys somewhere safe before you wipe the old box, and signing that box in to a Synology Account while it still works. Do both today, even if you have no plans to move anything, and the rest of this page becomes routine.

What a Synology License Transfer Actually Moves

Synology sells two kinds of license, and they travel differently. Perpetual licenses are bought once and never expire. Subscription licenses run for a fixed term and need renewing. The table below is the short version.

Licence

Taper

How it moves

Surveillance Station device license

Perpetual

Delete on the old server, add on the new one, or migrate with the Synology Account

Licence MailPlus

Perpetual

Enter the keys on a NAS signed in to the same Synology Account

Licence Virtual DSM

Term-based software updates

Deactivate in Virtual Machine Manager, then add on the new host

Licence VMM Pro

Subscription, 1 or 3 years

Add the same key on a remaining host and accept the migration

Default and free licenses

Included with hardware

Never transferable

In every case the key itself does not change. A Synology license transfer only changes which server the key is active on, and Synology checks that it is active on exactly one.

Synology License Transfer vs Buying a Used License

Moving keys between your own servers and buying keys from someone else use the same buttons, but they are not the same thing. In your own move, you control both ends: you delete the key and you add it. With a used license, the seller does the deleting, and you are trusting that they did it properly and do not still control the Synology Account the key was registered to.

If you are weighing a second-hand key, read buying a used Surveillance Station license safely first. It covers what Synology and EU law say about resale and the checks worth doing before you pay.

Before You Start: Sign the NAS In to a Synology Account

The single most useful thing you can do for a future move costs nothing. In DSM, open Control Panel and sign the NAS in to your Synology Account. Synology recommends this specifically so that you can still move licenses if the server later fails or you lose its password.

Copy your keys now. In Surveillance Station, License, use Show License Key and keep the list with your purchase records.

Check Internet access on both servers. Deleting and adding keys needs a connection to Synology.

Count the default licenses. They will not move, so work out how many purchased keys the new server actually needs. This is where the Synology Account sign-in pays off. Surveillance Station can migrate the licenses without the old box, as long as it was signed in to a valid account.

On the target server, open Surveillance Station, then License, and click Add.

Accept the agreement, choose the recording server if you use CMS, and paste the keys.

Surveillance Station recognizes that the keys are already active and opens a Migrate window. Click Authenticate.

Sign in with the Synology Account the old NAS used, tick the confirmation box and click Migrate.

Review the summary and click Finish.

If the old NAS was never signed in to an account and it no longer starts, there is nothing for Surveillance Station to verify against. That situation needs Synology Technical Support and your proof of purchase.

MailPlus Licenses: Same Account, New NAS

For MailPlus, a Synology license transfer works differently from camera licenses because the licenses are tied to your Synology Account rather than to the server. There is no delete step.

Sign the destination NAS in to the same Synology Account first.

Open MailPlus Server on the destination NAS.

Go to License, then MailPlus, and enter your license keys.

Once the keys are accepted on the new NAS, the licenses on the old one become invalid. The free MailPlus licenses do not migrate. For first-time activation, see our MailPlus license guide.

Virtual DSM and VMM Pro Move Through Virtual Machine Manager

For the two virtualization licenses, a Synology license transfer happens inside Virtual Machine Manager rather than in a package of their own.

Virtual DSM. Each host includes one free Virtual DSM license. A purchased one is freed by deactivating it under Virtual Machine Manager, License, Virtual DSM, after which it can be added on another host. Moving purchased licenses to a different Synology Account, for example when a business changes hands or an installer hands a system to the client, is not something DSM can do on its own. Open a ticket with Synology Technical Support and include the license keys, the serial number of the NAS they are on, and your order confirmation.

If you bought from us, we can supply the invoice and delivery record for that ticket. Ask through the order email and we will send them the same day.

Licenses That Never Move

The default licenses are part of the hardware. A standard NAS includes two camera licenses, some NVR and DVA models include more, and every host has one free Virtual DSM license. None of them can be deleted or migrated, so a Synology license transfer never carries them to the new machine.

This catches people who replace a model that included eight camera licenses with one that includes two. The purchased keys move, the bundled ones do not, and the new box comes up short. Check the numbers before you retire the old server, and top up from our Surveillance Station license guide if you need to.

Synology License Transfer Limits and Notes

A key is active on one server at a time.
