The Synology BC800Z does not. It is a 4K bullet with a motorised varifocal lens, a hybrid infrared and white-light array reaching 38 metres, on-camera licence plate recognition, smoke detection and a five-year warranty — the longest in the range. It is also 1.3 kilograms of metal and needs a mount that can carry it. This Synology BC800Z review covers what the extra money actually buys, why half the internet will tell you it needs no camera license when Synology’s own spec sheet now says it does, and the one thing it cannot do that the cheaper cameras can.

SynoPower Club Point：When a customer asks for “the good one”, this is usually what they mean — but the reason to buy it is almost never the 4K. It is the zoom and the plate recognition. A fixed 110° lens covering a gate gives you a car; the Synology BC800Z zoomed to 47° gives you the plate. If nobody on your site will ever need to read a number plate or identify a face at distance, you are paying for capability you will not use, and a BC510 is the better buy.

목차

What Is the Synology BC800Z?

Synology BC800Z vs BC510: Where the Extra Money Goes

Full Technical Specifications

Synology BC800Z Setup in 4 Steps

What the On-Camera AI Detects

Where the Synology BC800Z Earns Its Price

Synology BC800Z Licensing Confusion, Explained

Synology BC800Z Size and Mounting: Plan for 1.3 Kilograms

Where to Find More Official Resources

Limits to Know Before You Buy the Synology BC800Z

참고문헌

자주 묻는 질문

What Is the Synology BC800Z?

The Synology BC800Z is an 8-megapixel outdoor bullet camera built around a 1/1.8″ starlight sensor. The Synology BC800Z records 3840×2160 at up to 30 FPS — genuine 4K, against the 5MP of the BC510 and 4MP of the CC410W. The headline feature is the lens: a motorised varifocal 4.38–9.33 mm with an F1.3 to F2.15 aperture, giving roughly 2.1x optical zoom.

That zoom range takes the horizontal field of view from 112.1° at wide down to 47.5° at tele. In practice you set it once during commissioning to frame exactly what matters, rather than mounting the camera closer or accepting whatever a fixed lens gives you. Night vision is hybrid: infrared LEDs reach 38 m, and white LEDs reach 31 m for colour footage after dark.

Wide: 112.1° horizontal — the whole scene, no detail.

Tele: 47.5° — same mount, same camera. The -30°C to 60°C range is the widest in the camera line and genuinely matters for plant rooms and unshaded southern walls. And the five-year warranty is two years longer than the BC510 and three longer than the CC410W — on a camera you intend to leave up for a decade, that is part of the price calculation.

Synology BC800Z Setup in 4 Steps

Commissioning the Synology BC800Z differs from the fixed-lens cameras in one important way: framing is a software step, not a ladder step. Get the mount solid first, then do the framing from your desk.

Mount it on something that can carry 1.3 kg

This is an all-metal camera roughly 27 cm long and weighing 1310 g. Fix it to masonry or structural timber, not plasterboard or a thin fascia. That is a different category of evidence.

Long approaches are the second. A driveway or yard that a fixed 110° lens turns into a wide, useless smear can be zoomed to 47° so that a person at 30 m is actually recognisable. Reviews say it is license-free. Synology’s current specification page says the device license is Required. Both were true, at different times.

The camera launched as a license-free model, which is what the hands-on reviews from that period describe. It was then swept into the same 2026 licensing change that moved the BC510 and TC510 off included licences. Coverage of that change names this model explicitly alongside the 510 series. Anything written before the change is now out of date, and there is a lot of it.

The rule that applies today is the same as the rest of the range: the licence is charged for recording into Surveillance Station on a NAS, not for owning the camera. Your NAS includes two device licenses; every camera beyond that needs one. Licences are perpetual, register to the NAS rather than to a camera, and can be reassigned when a unit is replaced.

One caveat specific to this model, and it is a firm one. The Synology BC800Z does not support Surveillance365. Synology’s own platform-support table confirms it — and it is the only camera in the current range that is also excluded from BeeCamera:

Platform

BC510 / TC510

CC410W

BC800Z

Surveillance Station (NAS)

예

예

예

Surveillance365 (cloud)

예

예

아니요

BeeCamera (BeeStation Plus)

예

예

아니요

Third-party VMS via ONVIF

예

예

예

So this camera is a Surveillance Station device, or an ONVIF device on somebody else’s VMS. There is no licence-free cloud route for it the way there is for the rest of the range — if a NAS-free deployment is what you want, you need a different camera and our Surveillance365 guide explains which ones qualify.

Buy a Surveillance Device License

Synology BC800Z Size and Mounting: Plan for 1.3 Kilograms

The specification sheet says Ø105 × 272 mm and 1310 g. Those numbers do not land until the box arrives. This is a commercial-grade camera in an all-metal housing, and it is roughly four times the weight of a BC510.

Practically, that means the mounting surface matters more than usual. Masonry or structural timber is fine. Plasterboard, thin uPVC fascia and decorative cladding are not. Three Allen-key adjustment points give precise physical aim, and once tightened the assembly is genuinely rigid — which is exactly what you want on a camera that will be zoomed in, because at 47° any vibration is magnified.

1,310 g and 272 mm long — check what you are fixing it to before you order.

Power is the easy part. At 1310 g and 272 mm long this is not a discreet camera, and it will not go where a small bullet goes. On some frontages that visibility is a deterrent and a feature; on others it is a planning objection.

Second, there is no speaker. The microphone is there with G.711 and audio denoise, but this camera cannot talk back. If two-way audio matters at that position, the CC410W is the only camera in the range that offers it.

Third, Auto Tracking is digital. The zoom is motorised; the head is not. Do not buy this expecting a camera that physically follows a subject across a yard — that is a PTZ, and this is not one.

Fourth, 4K at 30 FPS consumes storage quickly. A camera like this generates substantially more data than a 5MP unit, and continuous recording on several of them will reshape your drive budget. Use event-triggered recording where you can, and size retention honestly rather than optimistically.

Fifth, licence plate recognition is a capability, not a guarantee. Independent testing reached 99% at 7 m, but plate reading is sensitive to angle, speed, lighting and plate condition. Commission it against the actual vehicles at the actual entrance rather than assuming the number transfers to your site.

Finally, check the licensing position for your own deployment before ordering. The specification says a device license is required, older material says otherwise, and a camera without an available licence will show a live preview while recording nothing at all.

참고문헌

Synology — BC800Z product specifications, the source for every figure in this Synology BC800Z review

Synology — BC800Z official datasheet (PDF)

Synology Knowledge Center — camera platform support table, the authoritative source on which models work with Surveillance365 and BeeCamera

BlackVoid — hands-on BC800Z review, including the 99% plate recognition test and the pre-change licensing position

Synology C2 — Surveillance365 plans and pricing

자주 묻는 질문

Does the Synology BC800Z need a camera license?

Synology’s current specification page lists the device license as Required. The camera launched license-free, which is why older reviews say otherwise, and it was later included in the same licensing change as the BC510 and TC510. As with the rest of the range, the licence is for recording into Surveillance Station on a NAS, and your NAS includes two device licenses.

Does the Synology BC800Z physically pan and tilt?

No. The only motorised part is the varifocal zoom lens. It is not a PTZ camera.

Does licence plate recognition need a DVA NAS or an extra licence?

No. Plate recognition runs on the camera itself, which is what separates this model from the rest of the range.
