In my 10+ years of experience working with computers and servers, I’ve built several data stations for work and have long relied on NAS (Network Attached Storage) to manage data. My Setup: Synology DS1618+ Configuration #

I use a Synology DS1618+ (6-bay with 16GB RAM) for my home data center, configured as follows:

• 2 SSDs in RAID 1 for Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) storage.
• 3 HDDs in RAID 5 for data storage.
• 1 HDD as a hot spare for redundancy.

Why RAID 1 and not RAID 0 for performance? I prioritize data safety over speed. RAID 1 ensures that if one SSD fails, my VMM storage remains intact, offering peace of mind.

Installing VMM on Synology NAS: What Can It Do? #

С Synology’s Virtual Machine Manager (VMM), I can run multiple Virtual DSM (VDSM) instances, providing great flexibility for managing services and resources. This allows me to separate and isolate various applications for smoother operations. When setting up your storage, it’s essential to consider your data needs for the next 5 to 10 years, ensuring your system remains scalable.

How I Manage My Virtual DSM Instances #

In my VMM, I run four Virtual DSMs, each with a specific purpose:

1. Entry Server: Handles external service requests and routes them to the appropriate servers.

2. Primary Data Server: Manages frequently accessed data and integrates services across all mobile devices.
   Функции: Surveillance, Drive, Photos, Hyperbackup, DS Video, DS Note, DS Cam, and DS File.
3. Secondary Data Server: Stores less frequently accessed but important data that requires special protection.

4. Work & Experiment Server: Dedicated to experiments and work data synchronization to prevent any accidental data corruption during tests.

Backup Strategy #

In addition to my NAS setup, I use a USB external hard drive connected via a Tapo smart plug for a secondary backup. This drive runs a full data backup every weekend on an automated schedule, providing an extra layer of protection for my most critical files.

Many people believe that simply purchasing a NAS guarantees foolproof data protection, or they find NAS setups too complex to manage. However, the basic framework I’ve outlined here is a great starting point, especially for those familiar with NAS systems.

For those new to NAS, this configuration offers a scalable approach. After over a decade of using NAS, this setup has stabilized as my go-to solution, accommodating my family of four, two surveillance systems, and the occasional studio backup for friends.

A Crucial Note on Virtual DSM Licensing #

One important thing to keep in mind is that Synology NAS only provides one free VDSM (Virtual DSM) license. If you want to run additional virtual machines, you’ll need to purchase extra VDSM licenses. Each new virtual machine requires its own license key.

While this adds some cost, it’s a valuable investment if you have diverse needs, such as isolating different services or applications within their own VDSM instances. Having multiple VDSM not only enhances system flexibility but also strengthens data security. It’s especially useful when you need to create test environments without impacting your main system.
