What is not identical is where the two can physically go, and one rating the bullet does not carry. The Synology TC510 records 2880×1620 at up to 30 FPS through a fixed 2.8 mm F1.8 lens, giving 110° horizontal, 56° vertical and 132° diagonal coverage. Night vision reaches 30 metres using four 1 W infrared LEDs. The housing carries IP66 and IP67 ratings plus IK10 impact resistance, and the whole thing weighs 387 g and draws under 5 W over standard PoE.

Synology TC510 Setup in 4 Steps
The Synology TC510 electronics are identical to the bullet, so the only step that differs is the physical one — and on a turret it is the step that decides whether the camera is any good.
Mount it, then aim it inside the housing
Fix the base flat to the soffit, ceiling or wall. Unlike a bullet you do not aim by rotating the whole camera — you loosen the ball inside the dome and tilt it on three axes to the exact angle you want. Get the base square first; a crooked base limits how far the ball can travel.
Connect PoE and add the camera
One cable carries power and data over IEEE 802.3af, and the camera draws under 5 W. Open Surveillance Station, go to IP Camera then Add, and it will be discovered automatically on the local network. Set the admin password when prompted — the camera ships without one.
Apply a device license, if you are recording to a NAS
Every Synology NAS includes two device licenses. If both are in use, add a Camera License Pack before the camera will record a single frame. Skip this step entirely if you are recording to a microSD card and viewing through Surveillance365, which needs no licence at all.
Check the infrared for reflection, then enable the AI
Turrets sit close to walls and soffits, so infrared can bounce off a nearby surface and wash out the image at night. Look at the live view after dark before you finish, and re-angle if you see glare. Then turn on the detections you need: people, vehicle, intrusion, audio or tampering.
What the On-Camera AI Detects
Analysis runs on the Synology TC510 itself rather than on your NAS, so alerts fire immediately and your NAS processor stays free for storage work. The detection list is the same as the rest of the 510 generation:
- People detection — separates a person from moving foliage or a passing animal
- Vehicle detection — cars, vans and motorcycles entering the frame
- People and vehicle counting — line-crossing tallies
- Intrusion detection — fires only when something enters a zone you draw
- Audio detection — triggers on sound rather than movement
- Tampering detection — alerts if the camera is covered, sprayed or forcibly turned
Tampering detection is worth a second look on the Synology TC510 specifically. A turret mounted at reachable height is a more tempting target than a bullet three metres up, so the combination of IK10 and a tamper alert is doing real work here rather than filling out a feature list.

Where the Synology TC510 Is the Right Choice
Under an eave or soffit is the classic position. A bullet mounted there points down at an awkward angle and its sun shade does nothing useful; the Synology TC510 sits flat against the underside and tilts to exactly the angle you need.
Internal corners are the second. In a lobby, stairwell or shop corner a turret disappears into the ceiling line, while a bullet projects into the space and looks industrial. When a client cares what the building looks like, this is the camera that gets approved.
Warehouses, loading bays and car parks are where the IK10 rating pays for itself. Forklifts clip things, pallets swing, and a protruding bullet is the first casualty. A dome sitting close to the surface with a certified impact rating survives what a tube does not.
Where the bullet is the better answer is anywhere deterrence is the point. A visible camera above a gate changes behaviour before anything happens. A turret is discreet by design, and discretion is the opposite of what you want on a shop frontage at night.
Why the Synology TC510 IK10 Rating Matters More Than It Sounds
IK ratings describe resistance to mechanical impact, and IK10 is the top of the scale — it represents a 20 joule impact, roughly a 5 kg mass dropped from 40 cm. The BC510 carries no IK rating at all.
In practice this decides deployments rather than winning arguments. Schools, sports facilities, car parks, loading bays and any space where a ball, a trolley or a forklift can reach the camera are all positions where an unrated housing is a warranty claim waiting to happen. Insurers and specifiers sometimes ask for it by name.
It is also why the turret can be mounted lower. A bullet often goes high purely to be out of reach; a Synology TC510 can sit at a height where it actually sees faces, because being reachable is less of a problem.
How Synology TC510 Licensing Works
Synology TC510 licensing is identical to the rest of the 510 generation, and worth restating because most coverage gets it wrong. The licence is charged for recording into Surveillance Station on a NAS — not for owning the camera.

The TC500 it replaces included a licence that was welded to that specific camera and died with it. What you buy now is a separate, transferable device licence that registers to your NAS and can be reassigned to a replacement — of any ONVIF brand, not just Synology. Limits to Know Before You Buy the Synology TC510
Infrared reflection is the failure mode specific to the Synology TC510 shape. Because a turret sits close to its mounting surface, a nearby wall, soffit edge or overhanging gutter can bounce infrared straight back into the lens and wash the whole night image out. Always check the live view after dark before you call the install finished.

Second, it is not a deterrent. Being discreet is the point, but a camera nobody notices changes nobody’s behaviour. If prevention rather than evidence is the goal at that position, mount a bullet instead.
Third, the lens is fixed at 2.8 mm. A 110° view is excellent for covering a forecourt and poor for reading a number plate at distance. If identification at range is what the position needs, the BC800Z has a motorised zoom and on-camera plate recognition.
Fourth, the thermal ceiling narrows at night. The range is -30°C to 50°C with infrared off but only -30°C to 40°C with it on, and a soffit-mounted camera in a hot climate sits closer to that limit than the headline figure suggests.
Fifth, it needs a cable. There is no Wi-Fi option in this body — if running ethernet is the actual obstacle, the wireless CC410W is the alternative, at the cost of resolution and night range.
Finally, if you are recording to a NAS, budget the device licence alongside the camera. A camera without an available licence will be discovered, will show a live preview, and will record nothing at all — the most expensive misunderstanding in this product line.
