The practical rule I give clients: if the camera is meant to be seen, pick the bullet. A visible camera above a gate stops trouble before it starts. If you are mounting under an eave, in a lobby corner or anywhere a protruding tube would get knocked, pick the turret — and note that only the TC510 carries the IK10 impact rating, which matters in schools, car parks and loading bays. The steps below cover the Surveillance Station route, which is what most NAS owners want. Have your device license ready before you start — the camera will be discovered without one, but it will not record. If you are going the NAS-free route instead, skip step 3 entirely.

Connect the camera to PoE

Plug the camera into a PoE switch or injector that supports IEEE 802.3af. One cable carries both power and data, so no separate power supply is needed. Confirm the camera appears on your network before mounting it permanently.

Add the camera in Surveillance Station

Open Surveillance Station on your NAS and go to IP Camera, then Add. Surveillance Station scans the local network and detects the camera automatically. Set the admin password when prompted — the camera ships without one and will not proceed until you do.

Apply a Surveillance Device License

This step applies only if you are recording to a NAS. Every Synology NAS includes two device licenses; if both are already in use, add a Camera License Pack under Surveillance Station, then License. Without an available license the camera stays visible but will not record a single frame. Skip this step entirely if you are recording to a microSD card and viewing through Surveillance365.

Enable the edge AI events

Open the camera settings and turn on the detection types you need — people, vehicle, intrusion, audio or tampering. Analytics run on the camera, so enabling them adds no measurable load to your NAS. Trigger a test event and confirm it appears in the timeline.

What the Edge AI Can Actually Detect

Marketing language around camera AI is usually vague, so here is the concrete list Synology publishes for this model:

  • People detection — separates a person from a swaying branch or a passing cat, which is what kills most false alarms
  • Vehicle detection — cars, vans and motorcycles entering the frame

For a house, the pattern that works is two cameras and no license purchase at all. Your NAS already includes two device licenses, so a Synology BC510 at the driveway and a TC510 under the porch cost you nothing extra in software. Point the bullet down the drive where its 110° view covers the full width of a two-car approach, and let the turret handle the door at an angle where faces are not backlit.

Small retail is where the licensing change bites. A shop typically wants four to six cameras: entrance, till, stockroom door, and the back alley. Two are free, so you are buying licenses for the rest — and this is exactly why the 4-camera and 8-camera packs exist, since buying singles quickly costs more than a pack.

How the Camera License Works Now

This is the headline change for the Synology BC510, and it is where nearly every review gets it wrong. The BC500 and TC500 never needed a Surveillance Device License. The 510 series does — but only on one of the two ways you can run it. Synology’s product page says “Required” because it is describing Surveillance Station usage.

The licence is charged for recording into Surveillance Station on a local NAS. It is not charged for the camera itself. That gives you two genuinely different deployments:

Think about what the old bundled license actually was. On a BC500, the entitlement was welded to that specific camera. If the camera failed out of warranty, the license died with it. You could not move it, sell it, or apply it to the replacement. With a Synology BC510 you own a separate, transferable device license: when a camera fails, you unbind it and assign it to the new one — and because a device license works with any ONVIF camera, that replacement does not even have to be a Synology.

If you record to a third-party NVR or VMS rather than Surveillance Station, the BC500’s bundled license was worthless to you — you were paying for something you could never use. Short answer: no. Not if your existing cameras still work.

Independent teardowns and the official specification pages agree that the Synology BC510 hardware across the two generations is effectively the same. Identical resolution, identical frame rate, identical lens and field of view, identical night vision, identical three-year warranty.

Read that table honestly and the picture is more balanced than the headlines suggest: Synology reduced the hardware price by about a tenth and moved the licence cost out of the box — but in doing so it turned a non-transferable entitlement into an asset you keep. For a new installation the total lands close to where it was before, and you end up holding something you can reuse. Limits to Know Before You Buy the Synology B/TC510

The fixed lens is the first constraint. At 2.8 mm you get a wide 110° view, which is excellent for covering a forecourt and poor for reading a number plate at forty metres. Wide angle and long-range detail are opposing goals; if you need identification rather than observation at distance, this is not the camera for that position.

Second, there is no optical zoom and no motorised pan or tilt. Once mounted, the Synology BC510 sees what it sees. Aim it carefully during installation, because adjusting later means going back up the ladder.

Third, the thermal envelope narrows at night. Operating range is -30°C to 50°C with infrared off, but only -30°C to 40°C with it on. In a hot climate, a camera mounted where it collects afternoon sun can be closer to its limit than the datasheet headline implies.

Fourth, plan your NAS capacity honestly. Continuous 2880×1620 recording at 30 FPS consumes real storage. Most installations should run event-triggered or scheduled recording rather than continuous on every channel, and you should size drives for your actual retention requirement rather than a hopeful estimate.

Fifth, verify NAS compatibility before ordering. Entry-level and older units have hard limits on simultaneous camera streams, and no license will lift a hardware ceiling.

Finally, if you are recording to a NAS, treat the device license as part of the purchase rather than an afterthought — though remember it is a durable asset that outlives the camera, not a consumable. A camera without an available license will be discovered, will show a live preview, and will record nothing at all. That gap between “it appears to work” and “it is actually recording” is the single most expensive misunderstanding in this product line — and it does not apply at all if you are recording to a card instead.
