The MailPlus Server package is free with DSM; licenses decide how many mailboxes it may host. At twenty accounts the arithmetic against hosted mail changes shape — there is no monthly per-seat invoice, no annual renewal, and the mail data sits on your own volumes where your existing backup and snapshot policy already covers it.

Keys register against the NAS rather than against people, so staff can join and leave without anything being consumed permanently.

MailPlus Server starts with five accounts at no cost. One MLP20 key lifts the ceiling to twenty-five, which is usually a whole small company rather than a department. Packs also stack, so a business already running MLP5 can add MLP20 later and reach thirty without touching the existing setup.

Both packs hold the same kind of license and differ only in quantity, though MLP20 works out a little cheaper per account and leaves one key to record instead of four. Choose the 5-Account Pack (MLP5) if you only need to top up a handful of mailboxes; choose MLP20 when you are provisioning a whole team and would rather not revisit licensing every time someone is hired. Two or more keys of either pack take a further 3% off at checkout.

Only the email accounts you enable inside MailPlus Server count. Domains do not — hosting several domains on one server costs nothing extra — and neither do the devices people read mail on. Twenty-five active mailboxes is the line to stay under, so audit the account list before assuming you have outgrown it.

Mail at this scale is heavier on disk and memory than file sharing, and it never stops writing. Check your model against the MailPlus Server requirements before migrating a busy company domain, and give the volume enough headroom for years of attachments rather than months. Activation itself needs an internet connection and a Synology Account, and the key ties to that account when applied.

Licenses are not region locked. Moving to a larger NAS later means deleting the license from the old unit first and activating it on the new one — Synology documents the procedure in its MailPlus license help pages.
