You enter the key in the License app inside the Surveillance Station package. Licenses attach to the NAS, not to individual cameras, so you can retire or replace hardware over the years without losing channels.

Every Synology NAS arrives with two camera licenses, so a CLP8 key puts you at ten recorded cameras. For sites planning eight cameras today, that leaves two channels spare for the corner you did not think of during the survey.

One key for eight channels is the least to administer, which is why CLP8 suits multi-room offices, warehouses and anything being built out in one go. For smaller jobs the 4-Camera pack (CLP4) or a single 1-Camera pack (CLP1) may be the better fit. Order two or more CLP8 keys and a further 10% comes off at checkout.

Worth being precise about, because most buyers get it backwards: a Synology Camera License is consumed by recording to the NAS through Surveillance Station, not by owning a camera. A Synology camera recording to its own microSD card or to Synology’s cloud service uses no license; point it at the NAS and it takes a channel. Size the pack against the cameras you will record locally.

Confirm your cameras appear on Synology’s supported camera list — thousands of ONVIF and brand-specific models are covered. Before committing to eight more channels, also check your NAS model’s maximum camera count and whether its CPU and storage suit continuous recording at that scale.

Licenses carry no regional restriction and work across the Synology NAS range. Moving to a bigger unit later means deleting the license from the old NAS and activating it on the new one — both procedures are documented in Synology’s license management help pages.
