■ FAQ for Surveillance Station License Pack

A: Yes, and we’re more than just a reseller. SynoPower Club is listed in two areas from Synology > Where to Buy: System Integrator (high partner level) and  B2B reseller. Our co-founder, Adair Hsu, was Synology’s 1st Global Support at their Taiwan HQ since 2006. After retiring in 2020, he continues as a Synology partner. In 2023, his friend co-founded SynoPower Club (Bitter821 LLC. ビター821合同会社) with Adair Hsu to serve Synology customers.

A: The number of free licenses depends on the product:

  • Synology NAS: 2 free licenses
  • Network Video Recorder (Discontinued): 4 free licenses
  • Deep Learning NVR: 8 free licenses

You’ll only need to buy extra licenses if your setup exceeds the default amount.

A: One license key is required for most surveillance devices, including IP cameras, I/O modules, and intercoms…etc.

However, Synology cameras like BC500, TC500, or CC400W come with embedded licenses, so no extra purchase is needed. Some devices, like transaction devices, need two licenses, and multi-lens cameras or video servers may require additional licenses.

Reference:

No need to renew. Once activated, the camera license is valid forever, including the free default licenses. Synology frequently updates their software, especially Synology Surveillance Station. There are easy-to-follow instructions for transferring licenses to a new or replacement NAS, making it a true one-time purchase.

Reference:

A: You can view all installed licenses and check how many are in use through the License app in Surveillance Station. If you need more licenses, you can add them here, up to the maximum number your Synology device supports. You can also remove licenses that are no longer in use.

Reference:

A: Yes, you can migrate purchased license keys anytime. However, default licenses cannot be transferred.

If you have multiple NAS devices and want to share licenses (both default and purchased), you can set up a Centralized Management System (CMS) on Surveillance Station. The CMS host will manage all licenses across the connected NAS devices, maximizing their utilization.

References:

A: Yes, if your Synology NAS/NVR isn’t connected to the internet, you can still manage licenses. You can install or delete them using either the Surveillance Station Client on a computer with internet access or the DS cam app on a mobile device.

References:

A: Synology doesn’t store your license key, so if it’s lost, they won’t be able to help recover it. That’s why it’s crucial to save both the key code and the invoice yourself. When purchasing from SynoPower Club, the key and invoice are automatically emailed to you, making it easy to back up.

We also recommend signing in to your Synology Account through DSM Control Panel when installing the license. This securely links the license to your account, preventing unauthorized transfers.

For backing up all licenses in a Synology NAS, go to DSM > Hyper Backup and include Surveillance Station.

Reference:

A: Since Surveillance Station version 9.1.3-10869, there’s no strict limit on the number of IP cameras you can connect to a Synology NAS. However, Synology recommends a range between 5 and 650 cameras depending on the model, to ensure optimal performance.

You can check the recommended camera limits for each NAS model on Synology’s product comparison page (for current models) or in the product specifications.

A: Yes, you can. Simply delete the IP camera from Synology Surveillance Station, and the license will be released. You can then reassign that same license, whether default or purchased, to another IP camera.

Licensing Plan Details ( from Synology official site)

Synology NAS/NVR comes with default licenses1 that allow you to set up and manage surveillance devices. Synology also provides three options for additional purchased licenses: 1, 4 or 8 Surveillance Device License Packs; each comes with a single license key, allowing you to activate 1, 4 or 8 surveillance devices at a time.

To find out the maximum number of surveillance devices supported on each Synology NAS/NVR, please refer to the specifications of each model.

License Units

Under most circumstances, each IP camera, I/O module, IP speaker, intercom, and access controller will only require one license, while each transaction device will require two licenses. However, multi-lens cameras and video servers for analog cameras may require additional licenses. For more details about supported cameras and surveillance devices, please refer to the Camera Support List and Surveillance Device Support List.

License Activation and Management

In Surveillance Station, go to Main Menu > License > then click Add. The installation wizard will guide you through adding device licenses into Surveillance Station.

  • The number of default licenses may differ. You only need to purchase extra licenses when your deployment requires more licenses than the default ones listed below:
    • Synology NAS: 2 default licenses
    • Network Video Recorder: 4 default licenses
    • Deep Learning NVR: 8 default licenses
  • One license can be applied to one Synology product at a time.
  • To activate or deactivate license keys on your Surveillance Station, please make sure you can access the Internet to connect to Synology’s Authorization Server. If your NAS is designed to work in an offline environment, you can use DS cam to process the license authorization. (Learn more)
  • Purchased licenses can be migrated, while default license keys cannot.
  • If you have deployed Synology High Availability or a CMS failover server, there’s no need to purchase extra license keys for the failover server, as the licenses will be automatically migrated to the failover server when needed.
